Research on the use of yoga in pregnancy and into labor and birth

Upright and active positions in both the first and second stages of labor are known to:

Increase contraction intensity and efficiency

Reduce medical methods of pain relief

Reduce methods to augment ('kick-start') labor

Increase a woman’s perceptions of a positive birth experience

Reduce length of second stage (Enkin et al, 1999)

Research into the practice of yoga in pregnancy and into labor and birth when compared to no yoga:

Increase maternal comfort in labor and in the 2 hours post labor

Decrease duration of 1st stage

Decrease total time in labor (Chuntharapat et al, 2008)
